The starting pitcher and the team are on the verge of a deal extension that would keep the right-hander with the San Diego Padres. Peavy led the NL in victories, ERA, and strikeouts. The player is on a short list of pitchers who, in the last forty years, can make that claim. Various media reports said that the contract would run through 2012. The offer would average between $17 million and $17.5 million per season.
