Right-hander Curt Schilling’s shoulder injury may require surgery that could keep him from playing for the rest of his life. This is really devastating news, as he may be looking at the end of his career. Forty-one year old Schilling himself said that 2008 will be his last year. According to the Boston Herald, Schilling may be injured on his rotator cuff or labrum, and it’s a serious enough injury.
Just three months ago, Schilling signed up for a one-year contract with Red Sox for $8 million. Now the Red Sox is looking for ways on how they can nullify the $8 million he signed up for.
The right-hander has not responded to calls for comments, either through telephone or email. Katie Leighton, his publicist, announced that he will not be commenting about the issue just yet. There is also no comment from Red Sox officials according to the team’s spokesman John Blake.
Last year, Schilling was in the disabled list for seven weeks because of tendinitis in the right shoulder. But he went 3-0 in the playoffs with a 3.00 ERA and helped the Red Sox to their second World Series win. The contract he signed up for in November gives him additional performance and weight bonuses amounting to $5 million.
