The Washington redskins had an addition to the team with the inclusion of Jerome Mathis, receiver and pro bowl kick returner. He was signed in to the team on Friday. Mathis played as a returner when he was with the Houston Texans in the year 2005. He has however been injured for the last couple of seasons. This year, at the closing of the season, the Texans did not make him any qualifying offer and he became a free agent.
Mathis set a new NCAA record for career kickoff return average. He averaged at 26.6 yards. Mathis has had two issues with the law recently. He was given a misdemeanor citation when his bull behaved aggressively and damaged a fence. He was also accused of beating up his wife. This charge was however dropped later on at the request of his wife. His addition to the team is a minor one compared to the big amounts the Redskins usually spend. They are focusing more on the draft of the month rather than on the free agent segment. In the off-season the team had re-signed a few of the free agents in their own team.
