This weekend’s Kentucky Derby was a strange affair. First, the beginning favorite “I Want Revenge” was hurt and could not race. He watched from his front row paddock as the other horses went on. Friesan Fire, the ersatz favorite, got scratched up very early, bled throughout the race, and just didn’t get to do the race the way he wanted to. Instead, 50-1 Mine that Bird came from almost last in the field to win the race in the stretch. It was an exciting end to the race with a horse that wasn’t expected to do anything particularly exciting. This might have, in face, been the most un-favorite horse to win the Derby ever, and it was a fantastic race!
