WHERE NO SPORT IS OUT OF BOUNDS

FIFA World Cup

  • December
  • 28

When we last saw major soccer teams playing in the World Cup, it was back in July 2006, when Italy and France battled out for the title. If you remember, there was a big controversy after one of the French players Zindane head-butted an Italian player. But that’s not the only exciting thing that happened during the tournament. The final match was won by Italy in penalty kicks, which is one of the most exciting ways to win a game like that. Italy had also won in spectacular fashion in the semifinals against the hosting German team. It was down to the final minutes and it appeared that the game would come down to penalty kicks. Instead, Italy kicked a surprise goal in the final two minutes taking a lead and then capping it off with yet another. Meanwhile, France beat Portugal decisively. During each World Cup, there are innumerable exciting moments, too many to name here, so you’ll just have to get World Cup Soccer tickets to find out for yourself!

Jimmie Johnson

The Associated Press has chosen their athlete of the year, and I must say it’s a long time coming. He has now won 4 championships in a row, which is hard to imagine in any other sport, and has now become one of the best athletes of all kinds. His Sprint Cup win this year wasn’t spectacular. By the time it was officially in his hands, it had been pretty much a fait accompli. He will be racing for 5th in a row next season, which is really impressive for such a young fellow. His number 48 is starting to become one of the most well known in the sport, even though he’s not nearly as flashy as some of the other most popular drivers and doesn’t create nearly as much controversy as the others. This is going to be a fun year though, and he’s finally been recognized for the strength that he brings to the race!

Top Moments of the Decade

  • December
  • 18

What are the top moments of the decade in the NBA? There are a lot of them and I’d be very interested to hear what yours were. There aren’t really any from this season, and most of the ones from the rest of the decade are mainly from the postseason, which isn’t unexpected. There is the Kobe Bryant 81 points game. There’s Michael Jordan’s final farewell from the NBA world. But the biggest story by far was the brawl in Detroit back in 2004. That was a huge fight and it changed the way people approach the sport. Ron Artest ran into the stands and started attacking fans. Where is he now? He’s an important player for the defending champions, the Lakers. There have been great ups and great downs for the NBA this decade; hopefully more fun awaits in the next decade!

Heisman and NCAA Football

  • December
  • 14

The NCAA’s Heisman Trophy was awarded to Mark Ingram this weekend and he thanked everyone in a tearful ceremony. The commentators immediately started buzzing about Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and all the other possible players that could have won the trophy too. And some people aren’t happy about where it went. One of the interesting pieces of this discussion so far is about the Texas Longhorns. Last year, the team went undefeated and did great but didn’t make it to the BCS championship because of the complicated and ultimately un-see-throughable system for picking the contenders. Commentators and even the President jumped on the league especially for the disappointment incurred by Texas and that there should be a playoff. This year, they are headed to the BCS Bowl through the same system and with many of the same players, and they are labelled as inconsistent and undeserving. How the times change!

Attention All Golf Fans

  • December
  • 11

This is a great time to get PGA tickets. Though the season is currently mostly in hiatus, it will be starting again in January. But one of golf’s biggest faces might not be on the course! Tiger Woods, about whom there have been so many rumors and controversies, might not be on the tour for large parts of next year, especially at the beginning. The announcements haven’t been made, but it’s possible. But that means that a lot of people won’t be getting tickets who otherwise would have. Meanwhile, it means that you will perhaps get to see a more exciting matchup than usual. Because Tiger won’t be in the running, it will open up the gates for other great players to make an attempt at the crowns. This will be a tough competition, but it will be a lot of fun to see. Catch all the best golf battles this year and see your favorite golfers putting their way to gold!

Unbeaten Somehow

  • December
  • 7

The New Orleans Saints remained unbeaten in the 2009 season somehow, by ending up with an overtime win against the Washington Redskins which was barely earned. When the Redskins were ahead during the end of the 4th quarter with an in-range field goal opportunity, we thought it might work out to be the Saints’ first loss of the year. But they botched the field goal and Brees threw for a big touchdown reception at the end. The game went to overtime where Washington had the ball, but it was fumbled away. Then Brees went to work again, getting down to the 1 yard line and then they got a field goal to win 33-30. It was an unexpected and unlikely way to come back, but that’s what you have to do as an elite team sometimes.

World Cup Drawing

  • December
  • 4

When the World Cup drawing happened earlier today, many people in the world waited with baited breath. The US was put into a good group with England, Algeria and Slovenia. This has been described by people in various media outlets as an easy group. But I know England is good, and I saw Slovenia almost take Germany by storm in last year’s Euro Cup. But we did avoid having to take on Brazil, who ended up in the “Death Group” which includes Portugal, Ivory Coast, and North Korea. Those are the two toughest groups. More generally, the best teams ended up in their own groups with a few lesser teams to join them. Expect some great fun in South Africa next year when these teams finally go head to head for the first time since Germany 4 years ago.

Tiger Faces the Media, Silently

  • November
  • 30

Tiger Woods was in a car accident last weekend. Or rather, Thanksgiving night. The reports started circulating on the typically news-quiet Friday after Thanksgiving, when the media is generally talking about how the shoppers’ attitudes are looking this year. But Tiger Woods has become a national guessing game this weekend. He tried to put the issue to rest, admitting he was in an accident and saying that he hoped for privacy for his family. But not only was he in this accident, it was at 2:30 am. And his wife was close at hand with a golf club, because he says she helped him get out by smashing the back window and pulling him out. Could it have something to do with the allegations of an affair? What about the police, who might be combing his medical records as we speak to see if he might have been injured in a domestic incident instead of a car accident? This story gets weirder and weirder, but keep watching for more info over the next few days.

Big 12

  • November
  • 27

Turns out you won’t have to pay big bucks to see the Big 12 in action this season. The Texas Longhorns and the Nebraska Cornhuskers are going to play an extremely exciting game at the end of next week. With Colt McCoy being such a strong player this season, with a possible Heisman in his future, Texas has been one of the discussed potential BCS champions this year. Meanwhile, Nebraska hasn’t been too shabby themselves with a 5-2 record so far this season. They won’t be BCS champions, far as we can tell, but it’s going to be a great competition no matter what. These two teams have faced off several times over the last few years, especially when it came down to the postseason. I have been told that Big 12 Championship tickets are already available on Vivid Seats, so you might want to take a look there to get your passes for the game!

Chiefs Get a Boost

  • November
  • 24

When the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, we thought it would be kind of a joke. With the Steelers defending a title this year, you could have expected they’d just make mincemeat of the Chiefs. But suddenly, they ended up regulation tied and the Chiefs marched down the field and got the field goal they needed to beat the reigning champions. The Steelers were ahead by 10 at one point, but Matt Cassel got the Chiefs back into it during the second half. The Steelers just didn’t get the momentum to roll all the way through the game. The AFC North went 0-4 on the weekend, but the Steelers are still struggling to even make it back into the playoffs this year, since they have losses to KC, Chicago, and several other underachieving teams right now. They will have to give tough performances down the stretch to keep ahead of Cincy and hold down the Ravens. If that weren’t tough enough, Roethlisberger might have to miss a week or two with a concussion! This is going to be exciting here in the last few weeks!
